Belize is just south of Mexico and north of Guatemala. This port has one of the longest and twistiest maneuvering watches I have ever seen. Generally ships anchor out of the city several miles but there is talk of Carnival building a pier right in the city. For now tendering here, is unlike most ports, a fun thing to do as they use powerful high speed tenders. Belize is an English speaking country and was formally British Honduras.

At times (as was my first trip here) the water is too rough to tender in and the cruise ships will just turn around and leave. The city itself is at sea level and over the years some hurricanes have devastated the place. The population of Belize City is around 70,000 and the currency is the Belize dollar. 1 USD = 1.95 Belize dollar. USD is accepted almost everywhere. The city has a reasonably good museum with some interesting Mayan artifacts and other minor treasures. Walking around the colorful city streets and over the Haulover Creek Bridge is interesting but often annoying locals try to offer tours or unwanted advice. If you stay in the fenced in area near the tender piers you will find licensed tours which are a much safer bet and only slightly more expensive than the unlicensed characters offer just outside the gate. Tours bought ashore are a bargain compared to ships offerings. Interesting souvenirs of local hardwood crafts are available at the pier shops and bargain seconds on the street parallel and just outside the gate.

Cave tubing is a popular tour but requires some walking. I have not done that but have taken a snorkel trip to one of the out islands. Drift snorkeling (good) was followed by a trip to the island bar (better).

The area is laced with some great Mayan ruins and a good one is a trip to Altun Ha. The road going to the ruins is pot hole pike and takes about an hour but is worth it. The road is a lesson in why you should use one of the licensed tour outfits with decent tires under a sturdy frame. I would have like to taken a snorkel trip to the Blue Hole but it is distant and expensive and takes most of the day. The pier area inside the fence can be crowded but is the best and safest place to eat and drink. If you book a tour on the pier ascertain when they are leaving as they try to fill the van and do not leave until they sell out.
