For several years WJBC tried to draw its customers to new venues outside the Eastern Caribbean during the hurricane season. One of these was to put the Amazing Grace on a run from Panama City to Playa Heredura in Costa Rica. A repo went from Trinidad to Panama City over a two week period from late May through early June. I took that repo in 2005.

One of the highlights was a transit through the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal is definitely an engineering marvel even as it approaches its 100th anniversary. The average cost of a toll to transit the canal is $54,000; the most expensive toll to date was $331,200 paid by the Disney Magic cruise liner; the cheapest toll was 36 cents paid by Richard Halliburton who swam the canal in 10 days. I'm sure WJBC paid the average. A tour boat I took in 2004 paid in excess of $1500 for a 1/2 transit. I suspect the Grace's toll was several times that.

We had to await our turn for several hours (a full 12 hours dead in the water near Colon) and did not enter the Canal til near sunset. When the 1st lock closed on the Atlantic side I saw a porpoise locked in! I suspect it died in the fresh water of Lake Gatun.

In 2004 I took the Grace on a cruise from Panama City to Playa Heredura in the Pacific Ocean. I arrived a day early to avoid plane problems. This gave me an opportunity to take a 1/2 transit on the Canal from the Pedro Miguel locks west of Lake Gatun to the western end.

The transit through one of the locks had a bullseye setup. Once a year those Canal workers who shoot the lines that attach to the cables from the mules have a contest for best shot. I suspect it is a close contest as few second shots are necessary to attach the mule cables.

Nice job Fred! Great looking pictures of the locks. I have been to both ends of the canal but have not been through the locks. I did get a speed boat tour from lock to lock and would like to add the center section to your excellent report.
