Cozumel Mini Tour

Cozumel is a stop on most western Caribbean cruises. San Miguel is the port and the area where most of the population of 72,000 live and work. The island is approximately 30 by 10 miles and rests only 12 miles from the mainland of Mexico. Spanish is of course the language but most everyone who deals with visitors also speaks English. The Mexican peso is the official currency but the USD may be more in use.

San Miguel stretches out along the west coast and has more souvenir shops than any other place I have visited. Some of the “treasures” are tacky but one can find a prize here or there. Most of the items are very reasonable priced and bargaining is acceptable except in upscale stores. It also has many bars and restaurants. One should likely stick to beer or bottled water here. The ice in mixed drinks is suspect.

Renting one of the old Volkswagens can be fun but avoid the scooters. Walking in the city along the waterfront is likely as fast as trying to drive as the traffic is very heavy here. Once you are out of San Miguel the traffic is light. Volkswagens bugs made in Mexico are popular and cheap to rent (bargaining might get one for half the asking price). The only thing that worked on the one we rented was the engine. We had a blast.

The snorkeling is good here although less so after the hurricanes of 2005. Wilma stayed over San Miguel and destroyed much of it including the massive new concrete pier Carnival had recently finished. I was stunned to see the total devastation the storm did to that much reinforced concrete.

On the southern end of the island are many modern luxury condos and the small Cedral Mayan ruins. The attractive Atlantic coast is sparsely occupied with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants. Crossing over the east-west highway road will take you to the Mayan ruins of San Gervasio. Though they do not compare with Tulum (usually offered by cruise lines as an option to spending the entire day in Cozumel) it is worth a visit.

On my first of six trips to the island I did not fare well. My port of departure was Calica Mexico sailing on the ship Carousel. The ship was blown into the stone jetty as we were leaving and one of the fuel tanks was punctured. In the morning we found ourselves stranded between Cancun and Cozumel. The Mexican navy and air force prevented us from entering port. Once the leak was repaired we were tendered to the pier in Cozumel and ferried back to our original port. The ship went to Alabama for repairs. We did get free drinks for a day and our money back. I of course bought another cruise.

I've been to Cozumel during several foo-foos with friends. Chankanaab National Park is a great place to spend the day. There is a nice beach with snorkeling, a dolphin discovery, bars and restaurants, etc. We always left plenty of time to stop at Carlos & Charlies for a yard (or three) of margaritas before racing back to the ship. We never had problems with frozen drinks at major restaurants, but wouldn't take a risk at lesser known establishments.

I am adding some pictures of Chankanaab from January 2012. It was an excellent place to visit. The snorkeling was extraordinary.
