Grand Cayman Mini Tour

In January 2012 I finally managed to get to Grand Cayman. Many years before I was on the way when my ship ran aground. I have been to the Western Caribbean many times but somehow missed this island until now.

Grand Cayman the country consists of three islands with Grand Cayman the island the main one. Ships anchor off the Capital at George Town. The island is 22 miles long and 8 at its widest point. The population is 52,600. It is a Parliamentary Democracy and the Chief of State is Queen Elizabeth.

With 600 Banks the main industry of the country, according to our guide, is laundry. Tourism is of course also big here. The island is blessed with beautiful beaches, clear water and excellent snorkeling and diving. The land is flat with the highest point only 60'.

Oddly all the tourist want to go to hell. Hell is a town on the West End with a field of treacherous looking volcanic rock. I never heard the word used so many times in every gag possible. After buying a door magnet with the word on it the elderly looking grandmother who sold it to me told me to "Get the hell out".

Other stops on the main tour route included a rum tasting poured freely. They need to loosen up the visitors as a bottle of rum was $40. The other stop was at the Dolphin show $5 where you can stare over the fence and pay another $5 for a beer.

Perhaps the neatest thing to do was to go snorkeling right in the center of town at Eden Rock. Tarpon were reported to be there but must have been out to lunch when I snorkeled. I did see a huge Parrot fish that must have been a hundred years old. It was missing half its scales. He probably thought I must be the same age as he checked out my missing top cover.

We enjoyed the pictures. Just down the road from Hell is a large turtle farm. This place is six times the size of the one on Bequia all concrete tanks and they let you pick them up. Then don't miss Stingray City. The water is only four feet deep and the rays swim over you for a piece of squid. Yes there are hundreds of tourist, but the people watching is almost as much fun as the rays.
