One of the nicest things you can do culturally when you go downisland is to visit an island school and if ambitious take a canned lesson to teach at their primary schools. The teachers enjoy the chance to see their kids with tourists willing to give another perspective to their lessons. While there deliver a package of school supplies you picked up dirt cheap at Walmart in late July early August.
Yes, I teach/mentor at five schools on four islands in the Grenadines and Grenada. My booty for my upcoming trip cost about $80 and includes:
30 composition books $15
12 graph paper notebooks $22
25 rulers $8
100 cap erasers $8
1000 sheets filler paper $5
100 pencils $10
100 pens $11.00
I'll spent another $50 in bag fees.
With this booty I will have supplied a classroom for a year. Downisland a composition book can cost $3.50 or more. Teachers are paid less than $400 per month. They can't help supply their students. I always include a gift of a zippered binder for the teacher filled with graph paper and filler paper plus some tape and a stapler with staples.
Years ago at Jumpup#1, I taught at the St George's Primary School in the capital (I was televised for National TV distribution) and at Calliste (sp?) Primary School next to the airport severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The roof there had caved into the second floor. Portions of the first floor were still being used by the upper grades. The Polish government had donated a pole shed building for the lower K-3 students. I can't tell you the gratitude the principals at those schools had for the materials donated that day by the attendees at Jumpup#1. Tim and I had to maneuver in our room because of the overwhelming support for that outreach.
Think about it.
7500 sunrises yet to go make every last one of them count!
