St Martin/Sint Maarten Mini Tour

 Columbus claimed St. Martin in 1493 for Spain. The Dutch occupied the island in 1631 to obtain its salt deposits. The Spanish regained the island in 1633 and shortly after relinquished it to the French and Dutch. They divided it amongst themselves in 1648.
 Sugar brought slavery to the island in the 18th century. The island became a free port in 1939.
 From the seventies tourism took off making the island a very popular destination. 85% of the population is engaged in tourism.
 In 2007 the French side became a French overseas collectivity.

Cruise ships dock or anchor on the Dutch side in Phillipsburg.
The town proper is with-in walking distance and launches are available to bring passengers to the town dock for a small fee.

Phillipsburg is the best place to shop for cameras and electronic goods. Bargaining is expected and often greatly reduces the prices.

Popular destinations are Marigot (the French Capital) and Orient Beach.
There are many inexpensive outdoor food and beverage choices in Marigot.

The currency on the French side is the Euro and the Netherlands Antilles Guilder on the Dutch. The USD is accepted everywhere. French and Dutch are the official languages but almost all speak English.

The roads are becoming increasingly congested and with a new cruise dock almost finished eight cruise ships will be able to dock. The entire island population is over 73,000 with tourists it could conceivably double in time.

Bill (AnchorClanker) and I visited the butterfly farm when we were on St Maarten in January, 2007. Highly recommend it ... it is a beautiful spot. When I get home, I'll post a link to my pix from the butterfly farm.

We went to the Butterfly farm in November, 2007 and it is worth the visit. Very interesting to see the different types of butterflies.

Also, the restaurant, Mr. Busby's, at Dawn Beach is a very good place to eat.

Try Andy and Cheryl's Baywatch Restaurant at Orient Beach for breakfast or lunch. Absolutely the best food available on Orient Beach.

Like everybody says, it was really neat when I was there over 10 years ago. At that time, it was not the easiest place to get to and the roads were absolutely horrible. When I was there 2-3 years ago, we didn't have enough time on the island to venture that far from the port.

Just another tidbit for St Martin.....

The golf club on Mullet Bay was a nice track, mostly right on the water!

Played a nice 18 holes there a few years back.

Um, Diane, (or anyone else) if you'd like to see more from the butterfly farm ... in a more screen friendly size, I might add, here's a link to my Picassa album from that trip.

Enjoy!
