Carriacou Mini Tour

On my first visit to Carriacou we tendered in to the little town of Hillsborough. Hillsborough is also the capital and the only town on the island. It is reported to have 100 rum shops. Hopefully our Rum expert Tuck will explain about that. To say the town ainít much may be too long of an explanation. Walking from one end to the other is not a long journey. Near the center lies a small museum worth a look for as much as itís gift shop where art crafts are sold. One required purchase is an Iron Jack Rum T shirt. Or is it Jack Iron? I always get that wrong.

We reboarded and moved up the coast to one of the best snorkeling spots I have ever seen. It had numerous types of marine life including squid and octopus. An interesting tunnel passed through the rock. It looked about 12 ft long. It was tempting to swim through it but I donít remembering anyone doing it.

On a return visit some of us took an island tour and it was outstanding for the views it provided. The pictures will tell the story.

Carriacou is part of Grenada along with Petite Martinique. The currency is the East Caribbean Dollar. The island is about 13 square miles.

Manchineel Bay and Carenage Bay near Harvey Vale have some small beach areas, spectacular because they are volcanic black sand beaches. By contrast Anse La Roche and Hillsborough Bay are white coral sand beaches.

I am really enjoying your tours Tim. But it's making me "homesick" for the islands. I'd be there tomorrow if I could - especially after the day at work I have just come home from!! Oh well, I guess I'll just keep on buying those lottery tickets!

is Snagg's on Carriacou?

If so, has anyone taken the ferry from Grenada? Could it be a day trip?
What time does the ferry run, in each direction?

Is there a reason to go to Hog Island? (ie bars)

According to Oxford, I can't afford to go to Petite St Vincent, ROFL!!

Just thinking ahead cheesy grin

Yep! Snagg's is on Carriacou. Visited with him last Nov when we went there on Diamant.

You can take the ferry from St. George's to Carriacou for the day as the ferry leaves promptly at 9 am and get's there around 10:30. It returns promptly at 3:30 and gets in around 5:00 pm. Cost $54 US round trip. That gives you enough time to do a little shopping, go to the beach, have lunch and of course, drink rum!!

If you go to C'cou for the day (in addition to going to Snagg's for the best rum punch that I've ever had [if he's there; he also runs a water taxi] - his place is behind a large old water tank on the right, about 150 yards to the right of the ferry dock - no sign, knock on the bamboo gate if it's closed.) take an island tour with Lincoln "Linky" Bedeau; he's head of the Carriacou Taxi and Bus Drivers Association, and very knowledgeable. Charges an hourly rate regardless of the number of passengers. Ask him to take you to the abandoned lime factory where his mother used to work. At the town of Windward, we got to see one of the "Windward boats" under construction up close and met the builder.

Carriacou is a really great island. We've stayed at Ade's Dream, Grand View and a new place in Hillsboro (can't think of the name), all very nice.
