Costa Maya Mini Port Report

A good port is one that is inexpensive, fun, with sun, relaxing, has good snorkeling, is interesting and has good cold beer. Costa Maya is just such a place. The beach bars are stuff of legend. A good wind could blow the whole place away as it nearly did in October of 2008 from the affects of hurricane Dean. This is Mexico but USD is the preferred currency.

The pier can hold two or three ships. Costa Maya was built as a cruise destination. It is a small but growing place. The area near the pier is modern and far more expensive than the little fishing village of Majahual (population about 200) two miles south. There is some entertainment in both places. I usually pass right through the new area and pay a taxi a couple of bucks to haul me to the village. The village has a single unpaved road right through it. Most of the structures would not pass code on an Indian teepee reservation but are picturesque.

Beer is usually two bucks but a cheapskate can get one for a dollar at the local mini store. Reasonably priced food is available at many of the beach bars and there are a few restaurants. Souvenirs are usually half or less then at the pier area. There is some sales pressure but it is mostly good natured. A snorkel trip out to the reef in a small boat from here is $10-$15. as opposed to plus $60 on the ship.

I love this little place. The village is fun to walk through, stop for a drink here and there and just relax and enjoy life at its best. It doesn’t get much better than spending a day in Majahual. Enjoy it now in a few years it will likely be another Cancun.

I stopped in Costa Maya on a foo-foo last year. I took Tim's advice, skipped the cruise ship port (which was a zoo) and headed into the village. Had a perfect afternoon parked on the beach, with an endless and cheap profusion of food and beverage served by very friendly locals. Fantastic day!
