The Tropical Storm Tomas has formed just south east of the windward islands. Grenada is now preparing for a possible storm. The University has shut down and staff and students were sent home earlier this afternoon. The stores closed at 5:00 and restaurants may also be closing. Flights for tomorrow may possibly be cancelled. The water supply will be cut off at 7:00 this evening to prevent any water calamities. Hopefully the storm loses power and doesn't cause any specific damage, however, the island is now getting prepared for the possibility of a real wallop.

Dr. Jeff Master's WunderBlog:

Potentially dangerous 91L approaching South America and Lesser Antilles
A very impressive tropical wave (Invest 91L), about 350 miles east-southeast of the southernmost Lesser Antilles Islands, is headed west-northwest towards the islands at 15 - 20 mph. In discussions I had with hurricane experts at NHC and NOAA's Hurricane Research Division yesterday, it was widely agreed that this system was unusually large and well-organized for this time of year--something one would expect to see in early September, but not late October. The historical Atlantic hurricane data base shows no cases where a tropical depression has formed so far south and east so late in the year. "Ominous" and "unprecedented" were a few of the adjectives I heard used to describe 91L, and this system has the potential to be a dangerous storm for the islands of the eastern and central Caribbean.

91L is now TS Tomas! As of 1800 AST only slight rain on southern part of Grenada. 12' seas extending 75 nautical miles SW and 45 nautical miles SE from the center of the storm.

Latest is 70 mph winds but still a Tropical Storm.

And I thought going this late in the year I wouldn't have to worry about hurricanes. Now I'm glad we aren't traveling until tomorrow. Will be glued to weather channel between now and planned departure to the airport at 5am Sunday. I hope we have enough solid news by then to make our "go" or "no go" decision. And of course this in only a vacation for us - our real concern is for the IWJ crew and all those who live in the islands. Hopefully this will be nothing more than rain and a little wind with clear blue skies by Monday.

Kathy,

I fully expect you to be traveling on time with no problems!

This may be very good source for news. Some roofs have been lost on Barbados.

Actually, if you want one single entry point to bookmark for access to just about every flavor of weather data you'd ever want, take a look at http://www.weathercarib.com . Sara does a very good job of raking it all into one place- and there's a lot of it!

Well I hope TS Thomas acts like TS Shary which was supposed to hit us at 9.30 last evening! It turned out to be nothing to speak of and we didn't even notice it!
