St Vincent is 18 miles long and 11 wide. The highest point on the island is an active volcano, La Soufrere. The last eruption was in 1979.

The population is about 120,000 with about 20,000 living in Kingston the capital.

95% of the beaches are black sand. Most of the other islands in the Grenadines have white sand. Traveling around the island is an up and down affair on narrow roads many with very steep drops along the edges.

Several beautiful waterfalls and very unusual topography make for visually exciting tours. Parts of “Pirates of the Caribbean” were filmed on the island and the locations have become tourist attractions.

Fort Charlotte sits very high up roads close to the edge of eternity. Although no shots in anger were fired from its canon the views are sensational. A small museum and art display are on the grounds. For a small fee a guide will walk you around and point out the various things of little interest. Beer and bathrooms are available.

The oldest Botanical Gardens in the Western Hemisphere are located not far from Kingston. A display of parrots including the national bird “Amazona Guildingii” is on the grounds. Guides are available for a small fee and beer and sodas are sold by locals just outside the entrance. Captain Bligh brought breadfruit to the island and dishes made from it are popular with the locals.

The Catholic Church in Kingston is a most unusual design and is located across from the Anglican Cathedral.

On the pier where the cruise ships dock are several small attractive shops and restaurants. Taxi and snorkeling tours are available right at the pier gate. The ferries to the other Grenadian Islands leave from the same area.

i remember our visit to St. Vincent very well. We were on the Mandalay with a group of friends, we took the high speed boat tour to the Balene Falls, visited the set of Pirates of the Caribbean, took a tour up to the Womens' Prison - for the view!!!

Thanks, Tim. Your pics, as always, are beautiful and these were no exception. They brought back a lot of memories. The gardens were spectacular when I was there on the Mandalay and I think of them often.

Thanks for the tour Tim! On our 2 visited there we did an island tour with snorkeling once and the high speed boat tour on the other. Both were tons of fun.
