Mini tour of Cartagena, Columbia

Cartagena (founded by the Spanish in 1533) is getting to be a popular port for cruise ships. Two ships were at the pier when I was there in January 2012. The city is huge with a population of about 1.2 million. The facilities at the pier are excellent although the pier itself is in the commercial docking area. A new ferry system hauls visitors from the pier to the old city for $5.00. A park like area is just through the port entrance with colorful parrots walking freely about. Reasonable taxis and tours are just outside the gate. We spent $25 for a tour that lasted about 3.5 hours. It included a visit to the large monastery (La Popa) high above the city, emerald shopping (a waste of time) a quick visit to the massive fortress (Castillo San Felipe de Barajas) and a walk through the old city.

Sir Francis Drake captured the city in 1586. Cartagena was under Spanish rule for 275 years. In 1811 it became independent. The city is a treasure for students of history.

There is a large beach on one side of the city. The water is muddy and packed with locals. At every tourist location hundreds of peddlers are all over the visitors. Silver jewelry, t shirts, hats and beer (not very tasty) are some of the items sold.

Cartagena is a beautiful city currently modernizing its road system and facilities. Driving around is similar to ridding in bumper cars. They miss each other most of the time.

Although not a place I would care to wander around at night. It appears to be relatively safe for tourists. One should take the usual precautions with their possessions when walking around.

Looks and sounds like an interesting place. The only country I have visited that I really felt unsafe was Columbia. I spent some time in Bogota and Medellin working with their hospitals. My translator and I were driven around in a armored Mercedes. Someone at my hotel went through my stuff and took the green onyx figures I had bought but left the paper.[/u]
