can someone tell me the design on the top sail of the forward mast. Is this sail the MOONRACKER OR SKY SAIL. Is Veal a fully rigged schooner ? Kind of look like a mermaid. Might be interesting if IWJ would post a picture maybe on their web site explaining the sails.

Looks like some kind of fish, for sure.
You make some good suggestions!

Here you go, Paul. I think the "?" sail is the flying jib. Hi

LIZ, WANT TO THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME OUT OF EVERYTHING ELSE YOU GOT HAPPENING TO ANSWER MY QUESTION. COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT THE DESIGN ON THE RAFFEE SAIL. IS THIS A OLD DESIGN AND WILL YOU CHANGE IT TO SOMETHING ELSE. I GUESS YOU ARE VERY HAPPY WITH ALL THE LIKES AND SHARES THAT THIS PICTURE GOT ON FACEBOOK. LAST TIME I LOOKED IT WAS OVER 15,000. WISH YOU THE BEST.

PS. I JUST GOOGLE RAFFEE. I AM SURE YOU KNEW THIS BUT FOR OTHER WHO READ THE POST. A raffee is a square-rigged topsail which is triangular in shape

Hi Paul--I don't know what the design is as we haven't unfurled the raffee yet, but the original sail is still on board. I think it's been flown about once a year for the 27 years the boat has been sailing, so it should last a good while longer :D cocktail

I agree. It would be fun to get that info.
When sailing Arabella last winter in the Caribbean, our captain gave us some cool info during Happy Aarrrrrs. One afternoon, it was all about the types of tall ships and how to tell 'em from their rigging. Another afternoon, it was all about the evolution of the anchor. He's a longtime sailor who owns his own tall ship (the Mystic Schooner, a very pretty but more rustic ship that sails out of New London, Conn in summers). And he is quite a nautical historian as well, and fascinating info. :D

yes, the raffee could be a flying fish. It could be a siren too. As in many thing with the sea we will find out in time. Liz, again thanks.

Liz, thanks for the words. Loyalty and Honor are two of my ethos. I send you these two pictures. The Navy ship is why I don't get sea sick . The other one speaks of why I do these type of vacation. Looking forward to my next adventure in May 2016 in BVI for two weeks

We have a few recent photos of Vela underway with sails up from last week but I'm not sure how to resize them to make them user friendly for the Shanty. They are on my iPad and I'll just have to figure out an editor of some sort before I can post them.
