I know that Paul already started a topic for his back-to-back sailing that includes the week of May 22, but I thought I might start a thread for those of us on for just this week.

I said "us"...yep, I'll finally get to meet Vela in person. I'll be joined by a sailing newbie, one of my good friends (Tory) who also lives in Puerto Rico. Her husband works with me at Microsoft, but he's staying home with their 3 year old. And taking care of my cats. giggle He's already called dibs on the next cruise, whenever that is. And of course my parents (Bill and Barb) will be joining us.

This will be a bit of a special week - we are happy to have on board a film crew to shoot some promotional video of Vela for use in various media outlets! Not to worry - they won't get in our way, and you won't be filmed if you don't want to be. They may be bringing a drone for filming, so we should have some awesome footage of this beautiful ship for people to drool over!

The film crew is from Ten Eighty Inc. - you can check out some of their work on their website They've done a lot of work for Jeep. I particularly like this Boeing Video, but I can't tell if the video is from the factory in Everett (not far from my old home) or South Carolina.

Anyway, we'll be arriving on Sunday at around 10:45 a.m. via Seaborne. It's a short hop from San Juan - it will take us longer to get to the airport than to fly to Tortola! We're leaving on Saturday evening, so no pre/post hotels for us.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Since Cinnamon stared a new post for this week. I should state that I ll be staying at Maria's by the Sea on both sat before the cruise. I understand that Vela is anchored out and not at the pier. I don't want to be either stuck on the Vela or don't have a way back at night. So I will bunk ashore on that sat. I am thinking of a day trip to Virgin Gorda but I am sure you will be abbe to find me at Pusser's.

shipmates sailing with me,

I ask and received this information. You will get your boarding instructions two weeks before sailing. I cut and pasted the reply. Hope this is helpful for your planning.

Hi Paul Hi
Boarding instructions go out 2 weeks before sailing. That email will tell you to be at the restaurant/bar in Village Cay Marina, Road Town at 2PM on boarding day. You and your shipmates will be met there by a crew member and escorted to the ship.

After throwing out a couple of hints, I officially announce that I booked my first (hopefully, of many) sail on Vela!

It's been way too long since I have sailed with Cindy, Barb and Bill and any other former shipmates, so I am arranging a sort-of last minute trip down island. Janine and Donna and Kathy have all been a great help from the home office, but I did want to check with some of you about your pre- and post-cruise arrangements.

Cindy, I read where you and Tori will be cruising over to Tortola and will NOT be staying on Tortola before or after the cruise. And Paul, I read some of your plans, but I realize you will be sailing for more than one week.

How about the rest of you?

I have the ability to fly out of New Orleans, or Houston, but I want to get the best price and best times, in order to arrive a day or two early and leave a day or two after disembarking.

Is it better to arrive on St. Thomas and spend one or two nights there, then catch the ferry on Saturday to Tortola?

I have good memories of staying on Tortola for our 2007 Jammerfest, so I might want to do that.

Please share your suggestions/comments!

Can't wait to see you all!

dellie

Hi Dellie,
Even though we will be there the week before you I found that it's so much easier flying in and out of St. Thomas than it is to use Beef Island. We will be staying on St. Thomas the 12th, 13th, and 14th and then taking the "Fast Ferry" over to Tortola on the morning of the 15th to board Vela. I exchanged emails with Janine at IWJ as she recently visited Tortola via the St. Thomas route and she said it worked well. It saves me long layovers from the left coast as well as customs on the mainland.
Hope to see you when we leave the ship.

ZIKA DENGUE CHIKUNGUNGA

as we all get closer to leaving I thought I would post my thought on mosquitoes protection. Most of this has been spoke of already. I am using a few different things for protection from mosquitoes carrying these diseases.

CUTTER ALL FAMILY MOSQUITOES WIPES only 7.5 DEET

OFF DEEP WOODS 25 OR REPEL 40 DEET

SAWYER MAXI DEET 98 DEET

Lastly you can buy SAYWER Permethrin Premium Insect repellent for clothing.
You cannt spray directly on our body but I spray all my clothing before packing. It is odorless and claims last through 6 washing. ( you can get at Homedepot)

I hate bring and adding to my packing but it is cost more in the islandS and sometimes you cannt find it.

See you all soon
Paul

Instead of bug spray, there are wipes that likewise have Deet. They take up less space in luggage & have less waste - no overspray. I was able to find a can of bug spray at Marigot Bay but had to leave it onboard since it was TSA oversize. About the only time bugs were really a concern was when we were ashore at dusk. And don't furgit the sunscreen!
As for Vela - what a gal!!! thumbup

Zika is a day nibbler so you need to use mosquito protection morning, noon, and night.

wipes have a very low DEET (7.5). Not sure I would recommend or take a chance with wipes. I am guessing you are doing carryon and that is why TSA wouldn't let you take on the plane. Isnt a problem if you are doing check luggage.

The percentage of DEET in the repellent is an indicator of how long it will last. So 7.5% DEET would have a very short life. It is recommended that you use 20-30% DEET. I do take some of the wipes with me in carryon so I can put some on before getting off plane or out of the airport. I also keep one in my purse so if we're out, and I get a bite, I can apply it pronto.
